1-1. The history and origins of “human shogi”

“Human Shogi” is a unique event in which humans dress up as shogi pieces and battle it out on a large board. Its history and origins are profound, and it’s an essential element in discussing the relationship between Yamagata, Tendo, and human shogi.

Human Shogi evolved as an event to widely promote the appeal of shogi while recreating the tactics and culture of the Warring States period. The “Human Shogi” event held in Tendo City continues this tradition and has become a pillar of the region’s tourism culture.

The first event was held in 1956, a grand event set on Mount Maizuru. While initially attended by local volunteers, it now attracts professional shogi players and local actors, attracting tourists. The sight of armor-clad pieces moving is truly impressive, and the event is popular as an experience that combines history and entertainment.

“Human Shogi” is an event that symbolizes the deep history between Tendo City, Yamagata, and human shogi, and plays a major role in spreading shogi culture.

1-2. The relationship between Tendo City and “Human Shogi”

The strong connection between Tendo City in Yamagata and Ningen Shogi stems from Tendo’s nationally renowned reputation as a producer of shogi pieces. This region has developed as a “shogi town.”

Tendo City has been a shogi piece producer since the Edo period, with artisans’ skills passed down from generation to generation. Ningen Shogi plays an important role in passing on this culture to the next generation. Held in conjunction with the Tendo Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring, it also contributes greatly to promoting tourism in the region.

Tendo City accounts for approximately 95% of Japan’s shogi piece production, drawing many tourists as the “hometown of shogi pieces.” There is also a facility where visitors can experience making shogi pieces, balancing tourism and education. Ningen Shogi promotes the region’s appeal by selling souvenirs and hosting interactive events using shogi pieces, a specialty of Tendo City.

The relationship between Tendo City and “Human Shogi” is essential when talking about Tendo City in Yamagata and Human Shogi, and serves as an important bridge between local culture and tourism.

2.Highlights and attractions of “Human Shogi”

2-1. Actual event scene

When talking about human shogi and its attractions, the actual event scenery is one of its greatest draws. Its realism and intensity overwhelm visitors.

The sight of “human pieces” dressed in armor and kimonos moving around and playing shogi on a giant shogi board on Mount Maizuru is a unique sight. The event is accompanied by commentary from professional players, allowing spectators to enjoy learning the rules while also learning the game rules. (The photo above shows the event in 2022, when Ryuo Sota Fujii participated.)

Furthermore, the event is heightened by the production reminiscent of the Warring States period and the sense of unity throughout the venue. With the view from Mount Maizuru, you can enjoy sightseeing and a historical experience at the same time.

The actual event scenery is one of the attractions that symbolizes human shogi and its attractions, providing an unforgettable experience for everyone.

2-2. Fun spots for children too

reference:https://yukotabi.yukoyuko.net/archive/b00479/

When considering the highlights of the Human Shogi event, a major draw for families is the abundance of elements that children can enjoy.

There are plenty of interactive booths and participatory events that even children new to shogi can enjoy. The event combines play and learning through shogi culture.

The venue offers a shogi piece painting experience and shogi classes for children. We also recommend the “Tendo Hyakumensashi” event, where you can play shogi against professional players. This popular event allows anyone elementary school age and older to play against professional players. It takes place at the same venue after the “Human Shogi” matches on the second day.

On the first day, there will also be a teaching match with a professional knight, but registration for this is by appointment only. If you want to be sure to play shogi against a professional, we recommend signing up for the “Tendo Hyakumensashi” event.

When I was in elementary school, I lost even with a handicap of six pieces (rook, bishop, knight, and bishop), so if you’re not confident in your ability, handicap matches can be a good learning experience.

The human chess and attractions include a variety of content that children can enjoy, making it perfect for a short family trip.
